Common Moving Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

There are many reasons to move. Maybe a new career opportunity has led you to a new city, or you and your partner are ready to settle in a quiet, welcoming town. Whatever your reason for moving, this major life event can be exciting and stressful. But it doesn’t have to be stressful with these moving strategies!

Make Moving Easier with These Strategies

Don’t use large boxes for heavy items.

When you pack large boxes, you’re likely to fill them to the top. Filling boxes to the top works just fine for light items like linens, bedding and miscellaneous toiletries. But if you pack a large box to the top with heavy items, it’ll be too heavy for you to carry. So instead, use multiple smaller boxes for heavier items.

Don’t move heavy items yourself.

Heavy items like dressers, china cabinets, pool tables and safes are challenging to move. If you try moving them alone, you can hurt yourself badly. Don’t throw out your back by moving heavy items yourself. Instead, hire a professional moving team with the equipment and staffing to do the job safely.

Don’t pack chemicals and cleaners.

You probably have a bin or cabinets full of everyday household cleaners, pesticides and other chemicals. Don’t pack these in a box! If you do, you risk these items leaking or opening. Instead, wrap each bottle's or container's head with a plastic bag, then leave these in an open-top container like a utility bin or crate. You’ll be able to tell if one is leaking or spilling, so you won’t have to worry about them destroying a box or getting onto other items.

Don’t rely on family and friends to help!

Your family and friends are reliable people. And they’re probably willing to help you move, too! But moving is a stressful time for everyone involved. Tensions can run high, and relationships might be strained because of it. So don’t stress your family and friends by asking them to help you move. Instead, hire professionals who won’t feel hurt by the stress of moving!

Don’t start packing too late – or too early.

Many people wait until the last minute to pack for a move, adding stress and opportunities for mistakes. Alternately, some people start too early and pack up items they end up needing before the move. When you should pack for your move depends on how big your current home or apartment is, how many people are moving, and other factors. A good strategy is packing unused items one to two months before your move date.
